Course Content


1.      Causes of earthquake, Characterization of earthquake ground motions - Magnitude, intensity and damage potential. 

2.      Determination of site characteristics – Local Geology, soil conditions and liquefaction 

3.      A brief introduction to earthquake distribution in space, size and time; design earthquakes; response spectra.

4.      Seismic response of masonry, reinforced concrete structures and steel structure - Response spectrum method and dynamic analysis of structures.

5.      Performance based seismic design – Choice of construction materials, symmetric and un-symmetric plans, shape in elevation.

6.      Seismic design of foundation.

7.      Design and detailing of Masonry structures subjected to seismic loading according to codal provisions. 

8.      Seismic design and detailing of RCC structures as per codal provisions.

9.      Seismic design and detailing of steel structures as per codal provisions.

10.  Common mistakes in seismic design and remedial measures.

11.  Retrofitting of damaged structures.






Faculty from IIT Kharagpur will deliver lectures during the training.

A written test will be conducted before and after the training programme. Successful candidates will be issued certificates.






Participants will be given hardcopy of lecture notes.






Engineers, architects and planners serving government departments, urban development authorities and local self-governments (Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, and West Bengal) are eligible to apply for participation.




Registration Fee


No registration fee will be charged to the state government officials of Bihar/ Jharkhand/ Orissa/West Bengal.

Intimation to selected candidates (Maximum 50 participants)     : June 7, 2004




Travelling Allowance (TA)


TA will be borne by the participant’s parent organization.




Boarding and Lodging


Arrangements will be made to accommodate selected participants in the CEP guesthouse on twin sharing basis at IIT, Kharagpur. During training period, participants will be provided Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.
